Upside Down Experiment!

I have just been doing an experiment art course on the web and this is one of the completed assignments. We were sent this picture to download which is a drawing done by Picasso in the 1920's of a gentleman called Igor Stravinsky.

We were told to print it out upside down and then to sit and draw what we saw. Apparently when a drawing is upside down the right hand side of the brain takes over and concentrates on the lines only.

Then we were told to wait 20 mins and turn the picture the right way up and draw it again where the left side of the brain would take over and see much more detail.

Here they are side by side for comparison. It wasn't until I turned the picture the right way up to draw that I realised he was sitting in chair!
They look like two completely different people. One from the Simpsons and the other a Bank Manager!!!
A very strange experiment but one I enjoyed doing.

I'm also having to write this in HTML code as I am doing this in a different application which is the reason it looks a bit different from normal.
Also have been having difficulties blogging and commenting due to changing my service provider. (Hell of a lot of teething problems going on but have received some credit for it on my account)

Linking up to 1st unique or at least attempting to.

I've never tried the upside down drawing thing, I think it might frustrate me somehow. Well done on yours, though! The linking up worked! :-)

Great to see your drawings, something I've never been able to do myself.

I used to have the Betty Edwards book 'Drawing with the left hand side of the brain' it's very interesting but not something I've done in a long time. Well done for having a go.

I was taught this in art college years ago. It was to get you to draw what you see not what you think you see. Another trick is to section of a very small part of big picture, enlarge that section and draw what you see.
A great tip for people just starting to draw is to lightly scribble all over the page before drawing your picture, it takes away that I'm going to ruin a blank piece of paper feeling.

That's SO interesting. You draw very well - I like the Bank Manager!

I have heard of doing the upside down drawing before. Interesting way of making yourself use the other side of your brain! I use to do my old blog in html. A LOT more work! :) Thanks for reminding me why I like my new blog better. :)

Wow, these are both great but an interesting experiment. Maybe you should try it with wine...

I have used the upsidedown way of copying an image before and its weird how it works. A great exercise for the brain - but strange!

Hello Mrs. A., great experiment and though I see little differences because you're such a fantastic artist, it is noticeable all the same. So very interesting! I used to draw some time ago - might have to give it a try again to bring in some calm into some of my wacky days! I might even have to try this experiment on a less detailed subject...heehee

Hiya! It's Di here - re. the PJs for Norm. There are some on Asda's website, firstborn size - buttoned top, blue, but with Tiggers on. Not sure how babyish they might be for a chap but the style is right. Will let you know how we get on next week! Di xx
